What is Palm Wine?

Palm wine is one of the oldest known wines, naturally occurring when sap from damaged trees spontaneously fermenting within hours. Palms are estimated to have been around for millions of years, and likely naturally producing wine ever since.

Primates like chimpanzees and slow loris have even been observed seeking out the most alcoholic naturally forming palm wine. Enjoyed in many places across the world from India to Nigeria, palm wine has become deeply rooted in numerous cultures and traditions. In some cultures, such a wine must be presented to ask for a hand in marriage.

Considered one of humanity’s oldest libation (est. 16,000 BC) tapping practices are pantropical. Palm wine is typically retrieved by a “tapper” that extracts sap from palm trees. The spontaneous biodynamic wine can be consumed immediately for lower alcohol and higher sweetness, or allowed to ferment to produce a more alcoholic, drier and more acidic beverage.
